Three Key Benefits of SharePoint

As remote working continues to become the new norm, IT leaders are looking for more ways to increase business productivity.

As part of the Office 365 suite, SharePoint is one of the industry leading platforms for intranets, secure storage, collaboration and much more. As a product being used by 78% of Fortune 500 companies and continuing to grow in popularity, it is a standalone product in its own right and also powers the file experience within Microsoft Teams and OneDrive for Business.

At Doherty Associates we have been using and deploying Microsoft SharePoint since the original beta version (‘Tahoe’) and have had a dedicated SharePoint team since 2015.

Here’s just some of the ways SharePoint is transforming businesses working remotely.

Consistent User Experience

SharePoint allows all information to be centralised in one easy to access location and flow freely throughout an organisation. Whilst news sites allow users to stay up to date on key knowledge throughout the business. SharePoint’s document management features also allow for a seamless user experience. Through metadata, users can find the right files faster and easier through the collection and indexing of more detailed information.

Improves Productivity

SharePoint provides a portal where employees can connect with each other, allowing users to collaborate in real-time whilst being notified of any updates or changes to their work. SharePoint seamlessly integrates with other products within the Office 365 suite, therefore simplifying workflows and processes.

SharePoint is also available from any device, so working remotely means that users can have same working capabilities as they would in the office. With SharePoint also being accessible through multi-devices, even when employees aren’t at their desk, they can still be notified on information updates.

Secure Cloud Storage

Labels can be applied to different locations in SharePoint to allow documents to be classified as holding different types of information, e.g. containing personal or confidential information. Encryption of documents held within SharePoint document libraries can be enforced if they contain personal or confidential information by enabling Information Rights Management Retention policies can be applied to labelled documents to allow data to be purged if no longer required. Data leak prevention policies can be applied to labelled documents, preventing them leaving the organisation.

Furthermore, ensuring that users have multi-factor authentication enabled is an essential external defence when using cloud systems as it means attackers not only have to get password details, they also need to compromise other devices such as mobile phones or get physical access to hardware.
